Verdon day trip from Nice

Turquoise water hundreds of metres below the rim, a cliff village with a gold star on a chain, then a lake to cool off in. It is a long day from Nice, and a good one if you know what the ticket buys.

Looking down from a wooded rim into the Gorges du Verdon, with the turquoise river winding between pale limestone cliffs in evening light
The gorge from the rim. On a day trip from Nice, this is the angle you get.

Moustiers-Sainte-Marie, at the western end of the gorge, is about 2 hours 15 minutes from Nice by car, according to the Moustiers tourist office. A day trip has to get there, follow the canyon and come back. Count on four to five hours in the vehicle for three or four hours of stops.

That trade is the whole question. Below: what the day really includes, how the tours from Nice differ, and how to dodge the two things guests complain about most, car sickness and rushed stops.

The quick answer

Yes, if you can handle 4 to 5 hours in a minibus on winding roads. You see the gorge from roadside viewpoints, not from the river, then Moustiers and Lac de Sainte-Croix. The best all-round pick is the lake day at $143 with eight guests at most; the cheapest is $126, but it rates 3.9. If you want to hike or swim in the canyon, stay a night instead.

Is the Gorges du Verdon worth a day trip from Nice?

Yes for most people: the views are the reward, and they are big. No if you get car sick easily, or if you came to hike or swim in the canyon itself.

The Verdon is about 25 km long and up to 700 m deep. Tours sell it as the Grand Canyon of Europe. Treat that as a nickname: the American one is 446 km long and about 1,857 m deep. What makes the Verdon worth a long drive is the colour of the water and how close the road runs to the drop.

Skip the day trip if your real wish is the canyon floor. The Blanc-Martel trail takes 5.5 to 7 hours one-way, and no tour from Nice has time for it. People who get queasy on mountain roads should read the car sickness section below before they pay.

Eight seats, hotel pickup in Nice, and a free afternoon at the lake.

How long is the drive from Nice to the Gorges du Verdon?

About 2 hours 15 minutes each way to Moustiers. Add about an hour for the gorge road between Castellane and Moustiers, before a single stop.

The usual road from the coast climbs inland through Grasse and up the Route Napoléon to Castellane, the eastern gateway. The road from Grasse to Castellane is 65 km and twisty in places. From Castellane the D952 follows the north side of the gorge to Moustiers: 47 km, just under an hour without stops. The way home is mostly motorway.

What does a Verdon day trip from Nice actually see?

The gorge from above, at roadside viewpoints, plus Castellane, Moustiers-Sainte-Marie and free time at Lac de Sainte-Croix. You do not go down to the river.

  • Castellane: a small town under a tall rock with a chapel on top. Listings promise up to an hour; guests report closer to 30 minutes.
  • The canyon road: the D952 along the north rim, with stops at viewpoints such as Point Sublime, where the belvédère is a 10-minute walk from the car park.
  • Moustiers-Sainte-Marie: the village with the star on its chain, faience shops and 262 steps up to a chapel. More in our Moustiers guide.
  • Lac de Sainte-Croix: a reservoir finished in 1974 at the mouth of the gorge. Swim, or rent a pedal boat at your own cost.

Which Gorges du Verdon tour from Nice should you book?

For most people, the lake day at $143: eight guests at most and the best rated of the three. Pay $16 more for the lavender stop in June and July, or save $17 on the budget trip if price matters more than time.

All three pick you up in Nice around 8 a.m. and cancel for free up to 24 hours before.

What does the day look like, hour by hour?

Pickup around 8 a.m., Castellane mid-morning, the canyon road around midday, Moustiers for lunch, the lake in the afternoon, Nice in the early evening.

  • 8:00 Pickup at your hotel. Eat breakfast first.
  • About 10:00 Castellane. Coffee, a toilet and a photo of the rock.
  • Late morning The D952 along the gorge, with short stops at viewpoints.
  • Lunch Moustiers. Lunch is at your own expense on every tour from Nice, and the stop is short: pick a café fast or bring a sandwich.
  • Afternoon Free time at Lac de Sainte-Croix. A pedal boat costs extra.
  • Evening About two hours back, mostly on the motorway. The whole day runs 9 hours on the lake day and 10 hours on the budget trip.

The order changes from tour to tour and with traffic. Some days run the loop the other way round.

Will I get car sick on the roads to the Verdon?

Possibly. The last hour on every route is narrow and full of bends, and motion sickness is the complaint that turns up most often in reviews of the Nice tours.

  • Ask for a front seat when you are picked up, before the seats fill.
  • Take a tablet before you leave Nice, not once you feel bad on the D952.
  • Eat light and keep water to hand.
  • Look out, not down. Phones are the fastest way to feel ill on a mountain road.

If you know you suffer, think about Aix. The Aix tour reaches Moustiers across the open Valensole plateau in about 1 h 45 and looks at the canyon from Pont du Galetas, without the full cliff-road loop.

Less road, more time on foot: from Aix, Moustiers is about 1 h 45 away.

Can you get down to the river on a day trip from Nice?

Not on the tour itself. The closest you get is a rented pedal boat from Pont du Galetas, which can go roughly 2 km up the canyon, if your free time allows it.

There are three ways to river level. A boat from Galetas, as far as a line of yellow buoys that protects a rare fish, the apron. The Blanc-Martel trail, 15 to 16 km one-way with tunnels where a torch is required; this year it has a rockfall diversion near Point Sublime, explained in our trail update. Or a guided river trip near Castellane, such as aqua trekking.

The pedal boat is the only one that fits into a tour day. About €25 an hour at Galetas, queues in July and August, and the water closes in strong wind. Details in pedal boats and swimming.

When is the best time for a day trip from Nice?

June and September. Warm, quieter than high summer, and the boats are running. Late June to early July adds lavender if your tour stops for it.

July and August bring heat, traffic on the D952 and queues at Galetas. Pedal boats run from about early April to late October. In winter the middle section of the Route des Crêtes closes from the fourth Friday of November to the fourth Friday of March, which this season means 27 November 2026 to 26 March 2027; the closure post has the detail. The views stay all year. The boats don't.

For the purple fields, read the lavender guide before you pick a date: in 2026 the harvest on the Valensole plateau started on 29 June.
