The Verdon without a car

No train reaches the gorge, and the buses that do run were built for villagers, not sightseers. Here is what you can reach without a car, and when a tour is the only sensible way in.

The nearest train stations to the Verdon are Manosque-Gréoux-les-Bains, Digne-les-Bains and Aix-en-Provence TGV, according to the Moustiers tourist office. None is anywhere near the gorge.

Regional Zou! buses fill part of the gap. They reach Castellane and Moustiers, and in summer a few trips run along the north side of the gorge between them. They don't loop the viewpoints, they don't go down to the lake at Galetas, and they won't get you from the coast to the gorge and back in a day.

The quick answer

Partly. Zou! line 51 runs from Nice to Castellane, and line 450 links Riez, Moustiers, La Palud, Rougon (for Point Sublime) and Castellane, with extra trips in summer. Staying in a village, you can reach a viewpoint or the hikers' shuttle by bus. You cannot see the gorge, Moustiers and the lake in a day from the coast without a car. For that, book a tour with pickup in Nice, Cannes or Aix.

Can you visit the Gorges du Verdon without a car?

Yes if you stay a night or two; no as a public transport day trip from the coast. Buses reach Castellane, Moustiers and the north-rim villages. The Route des Crêtes, the Corniche Sublime and Pont du Galetas need a car, a bike or your legs.

The gorge is about 25 km long, with roads high on both rims and villages at each end. Buses run between the villages a few times a day. That is enough to base yourself in Moustiers or La Palud and walk. It is not enough to see the place in a day.

One day, no car: hotel pickup in Nice, the gorge, Moustiers and the lake.

Is there a bus from Nice to the Gorges du Verdon?

Zou! line 51 runs from Nice to Digne-les-Bains via Castellane. It gets you to the eastern end of the gorge, not into it.

In Nice it leaves from the airport (Terminal 2) and the Chemins de Fer de Provence station, and in Castellane it stops at Place Marcel Sauvaire. Departures are few and seasonal, so check the current timetable on zou.maregionsud.fr before you plan around it.

From Castellane, line 450 continues west in season along the gorge road towards La Palud and Moustiers. Together the two lines make a two-day trip possible. Not a day trip.

Is there a bus from Marseille or Aix to the Verdon?

Yes, with a change in Riez. Line 67 runs from Marseille and Aix to Riez via Gréoux-les-Bains every day, and line 450 continues to Moustiers and Castellane.

From the train station at Manosque-Gréoux-les-Bains, line 132 runs to Riez daily, according to the Moustiers tourist office. Line 450 runs all year as a school bus, then several times a day in season.

That is a fine way to arrive for a weekend in Moustiers. As a return trip in one day, it leaves almost no time in the village.

Does any bus stop at the Verdon viewpoints?

Line 450 stops at La Palud-sur-Verdon and at Rougon for Point Sublime. No bus runs the Route des Crêtes or the Corniche Sublime, and none goes down to Pont du Galetas.

In season, line 450 connects with the Blanc-Martel shuttle, run for hikers by the regional park. The shuttle leaves La Palud in the morning for the Chalet de la Maline trailhead and comes back from Point Sublime in the afternoon. In 2026 it ran on weekends from 3 April, every day from 29 June to mid-September, then on weekends until 1 November.

  • Fares: €8.50 return for adults, €5.50 for under-12s, €4.50 one-way.
  • Booking: required, and tickets cannot be cancelled or changed.
  • No pets on the shuttle, and no dogs on the trail.

The shuttle serves the trail, which takes 5.5 to 7 hours and currently has a rockfall diversion near Point Sublime: see the trail update.

What can you do in Castellane without a car?

Climb to the chapel of Notre-Dame du Roc above the town, about 30 minutes on foot, and book a guided river trip such as aqua trekking.

The chapel has watched over Castellane and the valley since the 12th century, rebuilt more than once since; two orientation tables up top name what you see. The path starts in the town centre, according to the regional tourist board. It is steep, so go early in summer.

On the water, aqua trekking takes 3.5 hours through gentle rapids to the Tusset bridge, gear included, from age 6. The meeting point is Camping Huttopia on the Route des Gorges du Verdon outside town, so arrange a lift or a taxi.

Is a guided tour better than renting a car?

For a first visit without a licence, or without the wish to drive cliff roads, yes. A car wins if you want the Route des Crêtes, early starts or a swim on your own schedule.

Should you stay overnight in the Verdon instead?

If you want to hike or swim, yes. Two nights in Moustiers, La Palud or Castellane turn the bus network from useless to workable.

The Moustiers tourist office promotes car-free weekends: walks straight from the village, including the path down to the lake and the boats at Galetas, and electric bike rental with charging at the tourist office for the Route des Crêtes. Travellers on the Rick Steves forum give the same advice: stay over rather than drive in and out.

Short on time? One day with a driver beats two days of bus timetables.
