The Verdon and its lake from Nice

A minibus of eight collects you from your Nice hotel at 8 a.m. and drives inland to Castellane, the road through the canyon, Moustiers-Sainte-Marie and an afternoon by Lac de Sainte-Croix. Pick it for the lake: it's the Nice day with real free time at the water, and a pedal boat or kayak if you want one.

Gorges du Verdon & Lake Sainte-Croix from Nice

About this experience

This is the Nice day trip with the most reviews: 402 of them, averaging 4.6. A driver-guide picks you up at your hotel or apartment around 8 a.m. in an air-conditioned minibus that seats eight. The route climbs inland to Castellane, the old town under a rock that stands nearly 200 m above the river, follows the road through the canyon, stops in Moustiers-Sainte-Marie and ends the sightseeing at Lac de Sainte-Croix, the turquoise reservoir at the gorge's western mouth. The way home takes about two hours, mostly on the motorway.

Be clear about what you'll see. Like every minibus day from the coast, this one shows you the gorge from above, from lay-bys and viewpoints on the road. Nobody walks down to the river. The water part comes at the lake: free time to swim, or to rent a pedal boat or kayak at your own cost. From Pont du Galetas a pedal boat can go roughly 2 km up into the canyon, as far as the yellow buoys. Pédalos chez Nounet charges about €25 an hour there, and it's the best money you'll spend all day.

The caveats come from the reviews, and they repeat. It's a lot of driving on narrow, twisting mountain roads, and guests prone to car sickness suffer. Several say the Castellane stop ran about 30 minutes rather than the hour they expected, and that Moustiers left time to eat or to explore, not both. Guides vary: some are praised by name, others gave little commentary. The listing also asks for a minimum of four per booking, so a couple should check the booking page before planning the week around it.

How the day runs

  1. 8:00Hotel pickup in Nice

The minibus collects you from your hotel or apartment. The first leg climbs inland, with a short waterfall stop on the way.

  2. About 2 hCastellane

A break in the small town under its rock: coffee, a pastry, photos of the chapel of Notre-Dame du Roc high above the rooftops. Guests report about 30 minutes here.

  3. Late morningThrough the canyon

The road follows the gorge toward Moustiers, with stops at viewpoints where the river shows green far below. This is the part people come for.

  4. LunchMoustiers-Sainte-Marie

Lunch at your own expense, then a wander past the faience shops. Look up for the gold star hanging on its chain between two cliffs.

  5. AfternoonLac de Sainte-Croix

Free time on the shore. Swim, sit in the sun, or rent a pedal boat or kayak.

  6. About 5 p.m.Back to Nice

Roughly two hours, mostly motorway, about nine hours after pickup. Summer traffic can add to that.

Who it suits

Book it if

  • You want the lake as much as the gorge, with a swim or a pedal boat to end the day
  • You'd rather share a minibus with eight than a coach with forty
  • You have one day, no car and no wish to drive cliff roads yourself
  • You're happy to see the canyon from the rim, not from the river

Skip it if

  • You get car sick: there are hours of hairpins
  • You want to hike down into the gorge: the Blanc-Martel trail needs a whole day of its own
  • You want long, slow stops in Castellane and Moustiers
  • You want lavender in August: by then the Valensole fields are cut

Tips before you book

  • Sit at the front if you can, and take a motion-sickness tablet before you leave Nice, not after the first bends.
  • Pack a swimsuit and a towel. The lake is the one place on this day where you can get into the water, and it's warm by July.
  • Ask the guide early which beach the lake stop uses. Only boats from Pont du Galetas reach the canyon, and they're first come, first served, so queues build in July and August. More in our pedal boat guide.
  • The path up to Notre-Dame du Roc in Castellane takes about an hour there and back. A 30-minute stop won't cover it, so settle for the view from below.
  • Confirm that your guide speaks English when you book. Guests report most do, and a few didn't say much in any language.

Frequently asked questions

How long is the drive from Nice to the Gorges du Verdon?

About two hours each way. Moustiers is roughly 2 h 15 from Nice, according to the village's access page. Count the gorge road itself and you spend four to five of the nine hours in the minibus.

Does the Nice tour go down to the river?

No. You see the canyon from viewpoints on the road above it. The closest you get to the water is the lake at the end, where a pedal boat from Pont du Galetas can take you about 2 km into the mouth of the canyon.

Is lunch included on the Nice lake tour?

No. Food and drinks are at your own expense, and most groups eat in Moustiers. Budget for lunch and, if you want one, a pedal boat at around €25 an hour.

Can two people book the Nice lake tour?

The listing sets a minimum of four per booking, so check the booking page for your date. If the minimum isn't met, the operator can move or cancel the trip, and a cancelled trip is refunded in full. Free cancellation runs up to 24 hours before.
