Booking choice: The Nice day trip for eight, from $159 per person. Check dates Tour details
The lavender people picture with the Verdon grows on the Valensole plateau, west of Moustiers. The regional tourist board gives the bloom as 15 June to 15 July, depending on the weather. In 2026 it came early: flowering had started by 10 June, and the cut began on 29 June.
That is the trap. A tour sold as lavender and the Verdon runs all summer long. The lavender does not.
The quick answer
Go between about 15 June and 15 July. The harvest on the Valensole plateau starts in late June and takes about two weeks, so by late July most fields along the roads are cut, and in August they are bare. For lavender and the gorge in one day, book the Aix tour or the Nice day trip for eight for late June or early July.

When do the lavender fields bloom in Valensole?
Usually from about 15 June to 15 July. The exact dates move with the weather each year.
2026 showed how far it can shift. Flowering had started by 10 June and cutting began on 29 June, then went on for about 15 days, according to the regional tourist board. The Marseille tourist office puts the Valensole harvest around 15 July in a normal year, with higher fields further north, around Sault, lasting until mid-August.
| When | What you see on the plateau |
|---|---|
| Before mid-June | Mostly green rows. In an early year such as 2026, the first colour by 10 June |
| 15 June to early July | Peak bloom in a typical year. The best window |
| Late June to mid-July | Harvest under way for about two weeks: cut rows beside purple ones |
| Late July and August | Mostly cut around Valensole. Sault, further north, flowers later |
| September to May | No lavender. Only trimmed rows |
Our pick for a date booked months ahead: the last week of June or the first week of July. Late enough for full colour, early enough to beat most of the harvest. The 2027 lavender post tracks next year's outlook.
Is the lavender still there in August?
Mostly not on the Valensole plateau. By August the fields along the roads have been harvested. The later area around Sault can still be in flower until about mid-August, but no Verdon tour goes there.
One guest on the Nice day trip for eight found their lavender already cut, and nobody had warned them. Ask before you book a late-July date. If August is your only window, book the Verdon for the gorge and the lake, and treat any purple as a bonus.
Here in August? Book for the water instead: free time at Lac de Sainte-Croix on the Nice lake day.

The Aix tour, the Nice day trip for eight and the budget trip from Nice all include Valensole in season, and so does the private boat day. The sunset tour from Marseille is lavender only, with no gorge.
Every tour from Aix or Marseille drives across the plateau in any month. What changes is whether there is anything to stop for.
| Tour | From | Price | The lavender stop |

| Day trip for eight | Nice | $159 | A field on the plateau, mid-June to mid-July |
| Budget day trip | Nice | $126 | Valensole fields in season |
| Private boat day | Aix | $1,430 per group | Off the main roads, 15 June to 30 July; outside that, more lake time |

Lavender or lavandin: what are you looking at?
Much of what you photograph near Valensole is lavandin, a hybrid of true lavender and spike lavender. It yields up to ten times more essential oil.
That yield is why lavandin covers so much of the plateau. Both are purple and both smell of lavender. Purists care. Your photos won't.
On a tour the lavender stop is a field by the road or a producer. On the Aix tour it is a local producer in Valensole.

The shortest road to lavender and the gorge: a Valensole producer, Moustiers and a swim in the lake, back in Aix around 6:30 pm.
Explore the day trip from Aix Tour detailsCan you walk into the lavender fields?
No. The regional tourist board asks visitors not to enter the fields, and they are private farmland.
- Stay on the edge or on the track. Walking down the rows breaks the plants.
- Don't pick the flowers. Buy a bunch from a producer.
- Keep dogs on a lead.
- Park off the road and never block a tractor gate: in late June the harvest is on.
- Watch for bees. They work the rows all day in bloom.
Can you see lavender and the Gorges du Verdon in one day?
Yes. From Aix or Marseille it fits well, because the plateau lies on the way to Moustiers. From Nice it adds a detour to an already long day.
From Aix, Moustiers is about 1 h 45 by car, and the plateau sits on the way. The Aix tour runs 9.5 hours: a Valensole producer, Moustiers, the lake and the view from Pont du Galetas, back in Aix around 6:30 pm.
From Nice, the day trip for eight takes 10 hours. Guests report about six hours in the car and three or four short stops. Worth it in bloom. Hard to justify in August.

What time of day is best for lavender photos?
Early morning or the last hour before sunset. Day trips pass at midday, when the light is flat and the roadside fields are busiest.
A Verdon day trip can't choose its hour: the gorge sets the timetable. If the photo is the point, take the sunset tour from Marseille instead. It leaves at 3:15 pm, visits a distillery or an olive oil producer and Valensole village, then stays in the fields until the sun goes down. It runs 5 to 6 hours and only in June and July.

Lavender without the rush: an afternoon from Marseille, a producer visit, then the fields at golden hour. No gorge on this one.
Explore the lavender sunset tour Tour detailsIs the Valensole lavender festival worth planning around?
Only if you like markets. The 2026 Fête de la Lavande was on Sunday 19 July, when many fields on the plateau were already cut.
The festival in Valensole village ran from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. with about 80 stallholders, cutting demonstrations and traditional distilling, reported Fréquence Sud. A good day out. Not peak bloom.
If you only have one summer day, choose the flowers over the fair and go in late June.
Late June, eight seats, lavender and the gorge in one day from Nice.
